What Do You Need To Work As An Armed Security Guard In Miami?
If you’re seeking to become a security professional in Florida, you’ll need to earn a license to provide security services. All security professionals need a Class D security training license to practice in Florida, and if you’d like to provide armed security services, you’ll also need to earn and maintain a Class G Firearm License. We’ve outlined the requirements for licenses below.
Class D License Requirements
In the state of Florida, anyone wishing to perform the services of a security officer must have a Class D security training license. Here’s what you’ll need to earn it:
- To be eligible, you must be a United States citizen or a legal resident alien over the age of 18 years old
- To earn the Class D license, you’ll need to submit proof that you successfully completed a minimum of 40 hours of professional training provided by a security officer school, or provided by a training facility licensed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. There are a few exceptions to the training requirement. These include:
- If you currently work as a law enforcement officer, correctional officer, or correctional probation officer and are certified by Florida’s Department of Law Enforcement's Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, a copy of your ID card satisfies the training requirement
- If you’ve been certified as a law enforcement officer, correctional officer, or correctional probation officer by the State of Florida, a copy of your training certificate for that position will satisfy the requirements for your Class D security license
- If you’ve qualified for a Class D1 security officer instructor license under Rule 5N-1.138(1)(e)-(g), Florida Administrative Code, proof of your qualification can satisfy the training requirement for your Class D security license
- Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces can use proof of any relevant military training or education to satisfy the training requirement.

Class G License Requirements
In the state of Florida, anyone wishing to perform the services of an armed security officer must have a Class G security training license in addition to a Class D license.
Here’s what you’ll need to earn it:
- To be eligible, you must be a United States citizen or a legal resident alien 18 years of age or older
- You must have a Class C, CC, D, M, MA, or MB license in the State of Florida in order to apply
- To earn the Class G license, you’ll also need to submit proof that you have completed at least 28 hours of classroom and range training related to the use of firearms in connection with security duties regulated under Chapter 493, Florida Statutes (F.S.)
- The training needs to include at least 12 hours of instruction related to the legal use of firearms
- The training needs to include 8 to 11 hours of instruction, as well as the successful completion of an exam related to firearm safety and mechanical training
- The training needs to include at least 8 hours of practical firearm range training

There is one exception to some of the training requirements:
- Class K instructors can, at their own discretion, reduce the amount of range training required to as little as 5 hours if a student can demonstrate mastery of firearms safety and shoot a qualifying score without the full 5 hours of range training. However, any hours reduced in firearms training will be added elsewhere in the curriculum so that the full 28-hour training requirement is satisfied.
Armed security professionals need to renew their Class G license annually by completing at least 4 hours of requalifying training. The requalification consists of a review of Class G curriculum and firearm qualification test. If license holders fail to shoot a passing score after three attempts, they will need to get additional remedial training before attempting to renew their security G license again.
